It was a dark and stormy night. An unnatural haze lingered over the land. In his bed, Jakei shivered. For a summer night the air was cold, and the sky was black. It was as if something evil lurked out there in the shadows outside.
Jakei rolled over, clutching his pillow, and tried to fall back asleep. But a worry nagged in the back of his mind. Something was not right. No matter how hard he tried, some ghostly force prevented him from sleeping. It made him uneasy. With a sigh he rolled out of bed, pulled on his shirt, and poured himself a cup of water from the pitcher on his nightstand. Quietly he left his room.
The halls in his home were silent as he walked in the dark. He did not know where he was going, or why, but his body seemed to move on its own accord. He was being drawn by an unseen power. Past his father’s bedroom, past the dining hall, past the armory, and out onto the terrace. With the full moon hidden behind thick black clouds it was nearly impossible to see in the inky black night, but something lying on the path to his right made him gasp. A body!
'Oh my god!' Jakei exclaimed. He leapt over the terrace railing onto the ground below, and began running toward the fallen form as fast as he could. Tree branches scratched at his skin and pulled at his clothes, but he payed them no mind. Heart pounding, he fell to his knees on the pathway and placed a gentle hand on the figure's arm.
Now that he was closer, he could see that this was a hybrid girl from Melania. By the looks of her she was skilled, though she appeared to be no more than eighteen years old. But she was in dire need of help. Her clothes were torn and bloody, and her hair was matted with blood. She needed the attention of a healer immediately. Without a second thought, Jakei picked up the girl, and cradling her in his arms, carried her inside to seek the help that was so desperately needed.
'Her situation is severe,' Jakei's father said in a worried voice. 'Whether or not she will live until morning is beyond my sight. My team of healers will do the best they can, but....' his voice trailed on.
Jakei could sense his fear. There was a good chance she might die. 'Is there anything I can do to help?' Jakei asked.
His father shook his head sadly. 'Nothing the healers are not already trying, but it might help if you just sat with her. She will need a friendly face if she wakes up from this ordeal, and you are the closest thing she has right now.'
'I understand,' Jakei replied seriously, 'and I will stay with her for as long as it takes. I will not let her die!'
With that Jakei turned and hurried to the room where the girl was being housed. She was surrounded by healers, all of whom wore the same concerned expression. They had washed her body and dressed her wounds with healing salve, but still she showed no signs of improvement. Her breathing was shallow, and her pulse was weak. One of the healers turned to Jakei with a sigh.
'It will be an uphill battle,' she told him, 'We have done all we can at this time. Now we can only wait and see if she wakes.'
Jakei nodded resolutely. 'I will stay with her through the night and keep watch as she sleeps.'
'Where... where am I?'
Jakei jerked awake with a start when he heard the soft words being spoken. He stared down at his patient, an immense wave of relief coursing through his body. She was alive, and from the looks of things, she was on her way to making a full recovery.
'You are in my mansion,' Jakei told her, 'I found you last night lying unconscious and nearly dead on a path coming from the forest. I brought you inside to my father's team of healers who tended to your wounds. Please, tell me your name and how you came to be here.'
'My name is Kitten,' she spoke softly; 'I come from Melania. I was on an errand from my father, to deliver a message to Delvagan at Mt. Ravania. But last night... all I remember is that I was walking through the forest when suddenly I was attacked by a group of werewolves and vampires. At least one hundred surrounded me. I tried to escape, but there were too many, and I had only my dagger for protection. And that is the last thing I remember. I do not know how I ended up here.'
Jakei smiled at her, 'The stars must shine favorably on you, to live through such an ordeal... that is more than mere luck,'
It was also more than luck that she had been found by Jakei. Now that the two were together, it felt almost like fate had lent a hand. Kitten was meant to be here, and Jakei was meant to find her. Why, Jakei did not know, but it felt so certain.
It also did not hurt that Kitten was the most beautiful individual Jakei had ever seen. Her long black hair contrasted with her bright blue eyes, set in a lovely face. And her slender and curved body, almost completely covered by the bed linens, was a further attraction. Jakei could hardly suppress his desire to run his fingers through her soft hair and against her perfect body, but he kept his feelings under control. Kitten had just barely survived a nearly fatal encounter. Now was not the time for romance.
Within three days Kitten had improved enough to leave her bed. The healers acquired her some new clothes, and she was able to wander the corridors and gardens by herself. But the one thing that troubled her was Jakei's absence. She had not seen him at all since the day she awoke. It seemed as if her rescuer had simply disappeared. She asked his father where he could be, but he had no answer. Jakei was gone without a trace.
Kitten desired to speak with Jakei again, and properly thank him for saving her life. But she also just wanted to see the handsome hybrid once more. She could not explain it, but she felt a deep connection to Jakei, either forged by the lifesaving bond, or by some other power. She knew that Jakei was someone special. Someone she had to see again.
It wasn't until the sixth day after Kitten recovered that Jakei returned. He rode up the same path where he had found her, dragging a net filled with the heads of her attackers, all one-hundred of them.
'Here are the fiends that attacked you,' Jakei called valiantly to Kitten, 'I found them hiding out in a cave,'
Kitten stared in surprise, her eyes getting wide. 'You killed... all of them by yourself?'
'I cannot let such vile hearted creatures roam free in our lands,' Jakei replied, 'and I did it for you. They nearly killed you. I don't want anything like that to happen again.'
Kitten could feel her heart pounding as Jakei spoke. Jakei killed them... for her. Before she could stop herself she leapt at Jakei and threw her arms around his neck, kissing the brave hybrid on the lips, and her face began turning red.
Jakei laughed in surprise, but did not pull away. 'What was that for?'
'Just a thank you,' Kitten blushed. She smiled, but when she saw the suddenly serious look in his eyes, the smile faded. 'What's wrong?' she asked worried.
'Kitten,' Jakei spoke softly, 'I have to confess something to you. That first morning you were here... I thought you were so beautiful. I wanted to kiss you then, but I did not know how you would react.'
'Really?' Kitten replied.
'I told myself I must not, because of the terrible ordeal you had just suffered. It was not the right time, but these past few days I was gone, I could think only of you the entire time, and now...'
'Jakei...' she sighed his name, 'I thought about you too. All the time while you were gone, I was worried I would never see you again.'
Jakei lifted his hand to gently stroke her cheek. 'I am sorry I ran off like that, I should have said something to you.'
Taking a deep breath Kitten said, 'Jakei, there is something I have been considering over the past several days. I think we were meant to meet each other. What happened to me... it was no accident, it was fate. I was meant to come here, and you were meant to save me.'
A bright smile broke across Jakei's face as soon as Kitten had spoken.
'You know,' He said taking her hands into his, 'I had been thinking the same thing! That night before I found you, I couldn't sleep because something was worrying my mind. Some strange power had leaded me out to the terrace, and that was where I saw you.'
Kitten smiled at Jakei, 'So you think... we are meant to be together?'
'I have no doubt of it.' He said, then leaned in slowly and kissed Kitten softly on the lips. 'I love you,' he whispered.
'I love you too, Jakei,' she whispered in return.
